Is it true that we peak in our 20s, and it's all downhill from there?

I just finished watching the movie "Proof" and it got me thinking. My academic life certainly went that way. My professional & personal life is heading that way too. Maybe I need to set more modest goals for myself.

I would think that maybe we get stuck at a point of time (in this case, our 20s)in our understanding of what "success" means, in both the professional as well as personal spectrum. As time goes by, there is change on all fronts -the context/needs/drivers - except in our own mindset, this lack of internal adjustment causing the sense of going downhill. This is of course pop psychology at its best, so feel free to punch holes!!

Isn't 30 gay middle-age? Our looks start to go, our energy dwindles, our recovery takes longer, but (yes there is a but) we have a greater appreciation for quality, we have greater life experiences to process. The funny thing is that no matter what we accomplish we never feel like we have done enough. And the older we get the more we dwell on the fact that we are not where we thought we would be. But the question is, "Is that really such a bad thing?"

I hate to say it, but cognitively we peak in the mid-twenties in SEVERAL ways. However, our abilities also increse in other ways (including cognitively), so that we are able to find ways to compensate for declines in other abilities.

So what I'm reading from all the comments is that our 30s shouldn't be about where we want to be, but making the best of where we are. Sounds very reasonable to me!

While we lose sheer mental sharpness past our 20s, I think we gain experience that sharpens our intuition and decision making abilities. Perhaps thats why people peak in business and politics around 40?

Bingo.

Reaction time and fluid mental abilities decrease after the mid-20s, but our crystallized abilities, fund of knowledge, and ability to engage in more reasoned, well educated, responsible decision making gets better the more we know and the more experience that we have!

Right on!

Yeah, it's not all downhill after 25.

Don't think too much about it. It depends on how we do the things that keep us growing and developing as people. I believe the pocess barely starts in the 20s.

god forbid that be the case - what will we do with ourselves for the rest of our miserable lives. This is also not v intuitive why man may want immortality. Challenges evolve as you grow older and hopefully we will focus more on things which are meaningful

I think you peak somewhere closer to 40. I was an idiot when I was in my 20's. I like myself much better at 33.
